Sam McKinnis paints images you’ve seen before. His subjects have included the Free Willie movie poster; an infamous paparazzi photo of Lindsay Lohan mid-meltdown; and Tyra Banks’s 1997 Victoria’s Secret swimsuit catalogue cover. “There were certain images that I saw,” he told The New Yorker, “and I reacted to them the same way someone centuries ago would have reacted to a painting of Jesus: here is how you are supposed to live.” McKinnis’s second solo show at JTT Gallery includes a portrait of Nancy Reagan; a still from the Slovakian TV show Kinky Angels; and a dramatic rendering of a 2006 Cleveland Indians baseball game, during which a bat hit a spectator in the face. —Jensen Davis
