Memento Mori is Latin for “Remember you must die.” It is a powerful phrase, and catastrophic events place it squarely before us. In 2011, the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami was one such catastrophe. Towering waves struck the coasts of Iwate, Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Chiba, prompting a nuclear disaster that killed many thousands. With the tragedy in mind, the Japanese artist Yuri Shimojo began producing her monumental paintings, creating a series of mandala-like spheres in intricate combinations of color. On the 10th anniversary of Tōhoku, Shimojo’s works are presented in the U.S. for the first time—reminders of the overwhelming power of nature, and of our minute place in the universe. —E.C.
