Four decades after Francis Ford Coppola originally sketched out the blueprints for Megalopolis, the massive undertaking has finally arrived. Armed with an ensemble cast—Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, and Talia Shire, for starters—the film premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and divided the critics. Those who love it are calling it “awesome,” in the literal sense of the word. Driver plays Cesar Cailina, an architect in the futuristic city of New Rome who is licensed by the federal government to destroy and recreate the city, using a magical material called Megalon. He attempts to wrest control from Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Esposito), who wants the city to remain as it is. Meanwhile, Cicero’s daughter and Cailina’s love, Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel), is caught between them. The plot is complex and the cinematography is remarkable, if not otherworldly. See this in the theater rather than at home—Coppola’s vision for Megalopolis can only be appreciated on a grand scale. —Jack Sullivan
