Master of Mondsee

Feb 7 – May 17, 2020
Schloss Belvedere, Prinz Eugen-Straße 27, 1030 Wien, Austria

The abbey church of Mondsee was once home to one of the most important altarpieces of the late-medieval period. Of unknown origin, the Master of Mondsee is named for his masterworks, which decorated the church until the abbey’s dissolution in 1791, at which time his rich and ornate paintings were likely separated. What remains of the altarpiece ensemble is reunited for the first time in this exhibition, presenting eight pieces—each painted on golden backgrounds in a realistic style reminiscent of the Dutch school—that illustrate biblical stories, from stunning Virgin Marys to the epic Flight into Egypt. —C.J.F.
