Does a painting require a canvas? Must it be hung on a wall? Or shown on land? Charlotte Winifred Guérard, a French artist in her final year at the Royal Academy of Arts School, asks these questions in her latest project, St. Ives Painting (2024), a 32-foot-long scroll built in stages using a mechanical rotation device. Guérard displayed the work in five different locations in St. Ives, one of which was on the boat of a local fisherman named Matthew. St. Ives Painting is now on view at the Palmer Gallery, along with the artist’s smaller-scale works. —Paulina Prosnitz
