“I was abducted because I was raising uncomfortable questions with my art,” the Chinese-born Ai Weiwei, once a political prisoner, wrote in a 2019 op-ed for The New York Times. Ai’s rebellious spirit remains intact. In this exhibition, the artist presents his biggest Lego work to date, a re-creation of Claude Monet’s Water Lilies triptych, which is held at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. The garish plastic blocks would seem to have nothing in common with the soft, spontaneous brushstrokes of the Impressionist, and yet Weiwei’s take on Monet is amazing. He has also incorporated an unsettling black portal into the image—a chilling reference to his past. The work required 650,000 Lego bricks and measures 50 feet. —Elena Clavarino
