Martin Parr: We Love Sports

Oct 28, 2021 – Feb 13, 2022
Via delle Rosine, 18, 10123 Torino TO

“I like tennis tournaments,” the British photographer Martin Parr once told The Guardian. “That doesn’t necessarily mean that I like tennis per se.” Despite his feelings about the sport, the photographer—also known as a modern-day satirist—went on to publish Match Point, a book that covers Grand Slam tournaments in Melbourne, London, Paris, and New York. What emerges from the glossy pages of Match Point is that Parr is most interested in the social scene courtside—in the fashions and feelings of the spectators. “Basically,” he says, “my one big project is what the rich western world is up to in its leisure time.” Like his book– this exhibition of 150 photographs, distinguished by sharp color contrasts and a tongue-in-cheek style– highlights Parr’s entertaining take on the world’s snobbiest sport. —E.C.
