Marlow Moss: Space, Movement & Light

12 Duke Street St James's, London SW1Y 6BN, United Kingdom

Marjorie Jewel Moss studied in Paris under Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant, but with the onset of W.W. II, she moved to Cornwall and settled in the small village of Lamorna. For the rest of her life, Moss worked on Constructivist paintings and Neoplastic sculptures, approaching their geometries with mathematical precision. “We’d see her pacing up and down, pacing, pacing,” recalled a neighbor who peered into her studio. “And then she would draw a straight line. Her work was all straight lines and cubes. Then she’d pace up and down again and then—a square would be drawn.” Moss died in 1958. This exhibition brings together rarely seen paintings and works on paper from private collections. Artworks by contemporaries such as Max Bill, Piet Mondrian, and Jean Gorin are also in the show. —Elena Clavarino
