At first glance, Marisol and Andy Warhol have little in common. Maria Sol Escobar grew up in Paris to Venezuelan parents, and crossed the ocean to make her fortune. Andy Warhol was a shy boy from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. But in the Big Apple, both reinvented themselves and became pioneers of Pop Art. Both played with Coca-Cola logos and photographed the Kennedy family, and both played with gender identity. Warhol explored what it meant to be queer; Marisol explored what it meant to be a woman. Warhol became one of the world’s most famous artists; Marisol’s contributions stayed quietly in the shadows. This exhibition puts the pair’s artistic friendship in focus.
