To attend a friend’s funeral, Marcel Eichner traveled from Spain to Berlin, where he had once lived, and found himself stranded there because of the pandemic. Strangely enough, he quarantined in the apartment he had inhabited 15 years earlier, and filled the time painting. In the old apartment he discovered one of his own canvases, from 2005, an image of his room and window. It was the very same view he was currently painting. Eichner transformed déjà-vu into a visual diary. His stylized paintings—vibrantly colored and often fragmented—are contoured by rumination, atmosphere, and mood. —E.C.
