Since the 1970s, when he was a recent graduate, the stage has played an important role in the career of Swiss artist Marc-Antoine Fehr. Though he’s not a performer, Fehr views objects as “props” and the people around him as “actors,” and paints them as such, thus imbuing the mundane with a hint of surrealism. The show’s opening work, aptly titled Opera, was inspired by a horrific video that filmed the illicit activity in a slaughterhouse. Fehr splits the painting horizontally, filling the lower part with an orchestra pit that holds cellists playing music; the scene above shows cows pre and post slaughter. The meaning isn’t pretty. This is the artist’s fourth solo show with the gallery. —Elena Clavarino
