Mahler, Resurrection Symphony, with Klaus Mäkelä

Nov 18–19, 2020
221 Avenue Jean Jaurès, 75019 Paris, France

In publicity stills, the conductor and prize-winning cellist Klaus Mäkelä looks thoughtful, quietly stylish, and approachable, but the talent behind that boy-next-door smile must be off the charts. Born in 1996, the rising star takes up simultaneous positions this fall as chief conductor and artistic advisor of the respected Oslo Philharmonic and as artistic advisor of the Orchestre de Paris, with the music directorship of the French ensemble to follow two years hence. Mahler’s 90-minute Symphony No. 2 (“Resurrection”) is an epic test not only of a maestro’s logistical chops but also of the empathy, vision, and heart behind them. Here’s to a blossoming partnership. —M.G.
