Magic of the North: Edvard Munch in Berlin

Edvard Munch, Red and White, 1899–1900.

Sept 15, 2023 – Jan 22, 2024
Alte Jakobstraße 124-128, 10969 Berlin, Germany

In 1892, the conservative Association of Berlin Artists invited a young man from Norway, Edvard Munch, to put on a solo show. When the doors opened, however, visitors were shocked by his symbolic use of bright color and his unusual subject matter. The show was quietly closed a few days later. Munch’s polarizing work eventually caused a divide in the Association of Berlin Artists and the creation of the Berlin Secession. For the next 16 years, Munch lived in Spree, moving in and out of the German capital. With 80 works on view, this exhibition focuses on an important period in Munch’s art, one that is said to have launched Modernism in Berlin. —Elena Clavarino
