“I work from the people that interest me,” Lucian Freud said of the subjects he painted. The British artist, who was born in 1922 and died in 2011, experimented with Surrealism—a movement influenced by the writings of his grandfather, Sigmund Freud—before settling on realism in the early 1950s. A portraitist primarily, Freud was known for his intense, almost psychoanalytic relationship with his sitters, who were friends, colleagues, and lovers. With thick, expressive brushstrokes he produced figurative paintings that were fierce and personal. This exhibition, the first major survey in 10 years, presents 60 paintings spanning seven decades of Freud’s career. —Sabina Vitale
