“I’m part tree,” the Venezuelan artist Luchita Hurtado, now 99, has said, “and I’m part of anything that’s on this planet.” Fascinated with the interconnections between the earth, humanity, and the cosmos, Hurtado expresses her philosophy in her painting. Totemic figures, patterns, and abstract forms coexist in harmonious, warm colors. Here is a selection of Hurtado’s works on paper from the early 60s. —E.C.
