Handel’s obscure Alessandro finds Alexander the Great off on Indian soil, in the crosshairs of two rival queens. The castrato superstar Senesino headed the original London cast of 1726, supported by the prime donne Bordoni and Cuzzoni, superstars in their own right. In Long Beach, the Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński—yes, another superstar—has the Martha Graham Dance Company to play with. Don’t worry, he’s got the moves. His breakdancing in a recent San Francisco Orfeo had audiences in raptures. Staged in the open air at Costa Mesa’s Noguchi Garden, the boldly adapted entertainment also includes food and drink. —Matthew Gurewitsch
