Over the last eight decades, Lois Dobbs has produced art at a steady pace from New York City’s Lower East Side, Mid-Coast Maine, and New Jersey. Now age of 97, Dodd still paints almost every day, drawing inspiration from her immediate surroundings, whether they are backyards, fields, and forests or windows, night skies, and cities empty of people. The Kunstmuseum Den Haag hosts the first European showcase of Dodd’s work, featuring over 120 paintings. “It quite radically changes,” Dodd said in 2023, speaking of the landscape. “The weather changes, the light changes, the time of year changes. There’s so many variables that you never have really tacked it down.” —Alice Browne
