Fans have crossed oceans for La Davidsen’s unplugged Ariadne, Fidelio, Isolde, Lady Macbeth, etc. at the Metropolitan Opera and other international stages. Will they do likewise for carols in the engineered stadium acoustics of her native Norway? To judge by availability at the DNB Arena in the energy capital of Stavanger and at Spektrum in the national capital of Oslo, an announcement for extra shows is long overdue. The diva’s stated objective is to get everyone in the mood for Christmas. Might that mean “Jingle Bell Rock,” “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” and “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”? Not likely. For backup, Lise is bringing symphonic and choral reinforcement as well as her compatriot Leif Ove Andsnes, the pianist’s pianist on the superb Edvard Grieg CD she recorded in 2022. Her discography also features Christmas from Norway, which dates to 2023. Sung in several languages, the program opens and closes with Adolphe Adam’s “O Holy Night,” first in Norwegian, then in English. In the days of the Victrola, Enrico Caruso sang the original French (check him out on YouTube), and so did any number of his Golden Age colleagues. Davidsen’s playlist on her Christmas album harks back to their era and their ethos. Later artists like Marian Anderson, Leontyne Price, and Jessye Norman might have performed it, too, just as it is. To hear Davidsen’s soprano flow forth with such poised, luminous rapture seems well worth crossing oceans for. —Matthew Gurewitsch
