DESCRIPTION:Dec 2-5\, 2026\nFans have crossed oceans for La Davidsen’s un
plugged Ariadne\, Fidelio\, Isolde\, Lady Macbeth\, etc. at the Metropolit
an Opera and other international stages. Will they do likewise for carols
in the engineered stadium acoustics of her native Norway? To judge by avai
lability at the DNB Arena in the energy capital of Stavanger and at Spektr
um in the national capital of Oslo\, an announcement for extra shows is lo
ng overdue. The diva’s stated objective is to get everyone in the mood f
or Christmas. Might that mean “Jingle Bell Rock\,” “I Saw Mommy Kiss
ing Santa Claus\,” and “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”? Not lik
ely. For backup\, Lise is bringing symphonic and choral reinforcement as w
ell as her compatriot Leif Ove Andsnes\, the pianist’s pianist on the su
perb Edvard Grieg CD she recorded in 2022. Her discography also features C
hristmas from Norway\, which dates to 2023. Sung in several languages\, th
e program opens and closes with Adolphe Adam’s “O Holy Night\,” firs
t in Norwegian\, then in English. In the days of the Victrola\, Enrico Car
uso sang the original French (check him out on YouTube)\, and so did any n
umber of his Golden Age colleagues. Davidsen’s playlist on her Christmas
album harks back to their era and their ethos. Later artists like Marian
Anderson\, Leontyne Price\, and Jessye Norman might have performed it\, to
o\, just as it is. To hear Davidsen’s soprano flow forth with such poise
d\, luminous rapture seems well worth crossing oceans for.
