One of the most divisive and bitter conflicts in the past century, the Vietnam War left deep scars on the national psyches of both the United States and Vietnam. Picking through the remnants and relics of that violence almost 60 years later, the Italian photographer Nicola Bertasi attempts to create a new articulation of the tragedy and its aftermath. Overlaying contemporary images of Vietnam on archival images from the war, Bertasi creates a poetic drawbridge between past and present, rethinking the constructs of memory and written history. —Paulina Prosnitz
