Les Enfants Terribles

“Les Enfants Terribles” at Galerie56, in New York.

Feb 1 – Apr 19, 2024
240 Church St, New York, NY 10013

Get your wallets ready! Tribeca’s Galerie56 and the Galerie Jacques Lacoste have brought together exceptional pieces of 20th-century furniture. Their selling exhibition is titled “Les Enfants Terribles”—after Jean Cocteau’s 1929 novel of the same name—and it highlights the avant-garde invention that prevailed from the late 1920s until the end of the 1950s. Bringing together architects, decorators, and artists, the show features works by Pierre Chareau, Eileen Gray, Jean Prouvé, Le Corbusier, Alexandre Noll, and others. “On looking more closely,” the interiors specialist René Chavance said of Noll, in 1938, “one discovers the refinements of a cultivated spirit, the expression of a sensibility both alive and present.” Rediscover the era and its chic at the sale. —Jeanne Malle
