Tom Stoppard is now 85. His most recent play, Leopoldstadt, which premiered in 2020, took a year to write—“but the gestation,” Stoppard said, “was much longer.” Set over a span of 50 years, the show looks at a Jewish family in Vienna before, during, and after the Nazi annexation of the city. Stoppard, whose four Jewish grandparents died in concentration camps, said he made this family Austrian “so that it wouldn’t seem to be about me.” The show was an immediate success, earning Sir Tom two Olivier awards. It now heads to the Longacre Theater, with Patrick Marber, the original director, still helming the production. —Jensen Davis
