Léger and the New Realism

Fernand Léger, Visage à la main sur fond rouge.

June 15 – Nov 18, 2024
1 Place Yves Klein, 06000 Nice, France

In 1960, the art critic Pierre Restany wrote a manifesto for an artistic movement—“New Realism”—which he named in honor of the artist Fernand Léger, who had used the term in the 1920s. Nine people signed the document, among them Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely, and Daniel Spoerri. The following year, the group was joined by Mimi Rotella and Niki de Saint Phalle. While Pop artists in America were painting canvases with billboard and advertising imagery, these European pioneers were incorporating real objects into their art. This exhibition at MAMAC pairs works by Fernand Léger with those of New Realism artists. From across the Atlantic, art by Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring will also be on view. —Elena Clavarino
