“There’s an unmistakable feminist perspective to the work,” the writer Sheila Heti wrote of Laurie Simmons in 2014, “a suspicion of gender roles and the narrow, immature, child-like lives and psyches they promote.” Born in 1949 in Far Rockaway, Queens, Simmons began showing her photographs in New York City in the late 1970s. Known for using craft miniature scenes to evoke the postwar culture of her childhood, she questions the roots and effects of gender norms and stereotypes. “Cowboys & Interiors” presents three series by Simmons: “Big Figures,” “Color Interiors,” and “Color Coordinated Interiors.” Dating to the 1970s and 80s, these images reveal the artist’s vision in its formative stage. —Jeanne Malle
