“If you want to be the best,” Michael Phelps once said, “you have to do things that other people aren’t willing to do.” In sports, what it means to be the “best” has evolved over centuries. Due to equipment changes and better science brought to training, records are broken year after year. This exhibition looks at how the athlete’s body has been conditioned, measured, mutilated, augmented, and eventually worshipped in the Olympics and Paraolympic Games. Testimonies by journalists, coaches, and professionals round out the show. —Elena Clavarino
