Leaving the Mount Olympus neighborhood, you make a left and drive west. You pass the Magic Castle, a chateau-like mansion and private magic club, and make a pit-stop at a Googie-style diner before merging onto a 10-lane freeway and heading to the beach. Welcome to Los Angeles—a city like no other. For generations, artists have tried to capture its surreal, enigmatic spirit, but few have done it with as much lightness and humor as Steve Martin’s L.A. Story, his 1991 movie about a weekend weatherman in search of love. Inspired by the film, the curator Ingrid Schaffner and the gallery director Mike Davis have curated a group exhibition with Martin—who in addition to his acting and screenwriting is also an esteemed art collector and patron. The show features artists such as David Hockney, Calida Rawles, Ed Ruscha, and Kevin Appel, whose work echoes L.A. Story’s love for the city. —Jeanne Malle
