Julius von Bismarck: Fire with Fire

Sept 4, 2020 – Jan 24, 2021
Helmut-Kohl-Allee 4, 53113 Bonn, Germany

“I draw my inspiration from science,” says the multidisciplinary artist Julius von Bismarck, “and work artistically.” In his installations, sculptures, photographs, and videos, von Bismarck explores the consequences of climate change and how these changes alter our perception of nature. Promethean in his endeavors, he has used rockets to trigger lightning, gone head to head with an ocean in Rio and a mountain in the Alps. For this equally dramatic exhibition, von Bismarck focuses on fire, transforming video imagery of burning forests into frightening Rorschach symmetries. The images feel cuttingly relevant, especially as U.S. West coast fires rage. As the philosopher Gaston Bachelard once said, “Nowhere else does one dream as one does in front of the flame of a candle.” —E.C.
