In 2021, when Julian Knox—known as Julianknxx—was working with choirs and dancers to create his film Black Corporeal, he had an idea. He decided he wanted to cross Europe in search of the Black experience, filming Black residents wherever he went. Over the next two years he traveled to nine cities, from Lisbon to Barcelona to Amsterdam. “Some people read a poem, some people sang, some people danced,” the Sierra Leone-born artist told The Guardian. “The offering could be whatever it is. I couldn’t say no.” Julianknxx combined these offerings into a mesmerizing installation that splices together landscapes and local interactions.
