Pace Gallery has a new home in an aluminum-clad tower in Chelsea. And to inaugurate it? Who better than Julian Schnabel, who joined the gallery in 1983. This exhibition consists of 13 pensive paintings on weather-beaten Mexican tarps. The fabric offers the artist a point of departure, a repurposed surface that meets the pigments from his brush. Schnabel’s marks are elemental, sfumato, evidence of a presence. —E.C.
