JR: Omelia Contadina

Feb 11 – May 2, 2021
Via del Castello, 11, 53037 San Gimignano SI, Italy

The Parisian-born artist JR has long been interested in the changing life of landscapes, both urban and rural. To that end, he teamed up with the Italian director Alice Rohrwacher to make a film about the disappearance of traditional rural culture. The idea was born on a walk along the border between Umbria, Lazio, and Tuscany, where the two came upon an elegiac row of hazelnut trees. “On the way back we decided,” Rohrwacher explains, “if it looks like a cemetery, we have to hold a funeral. But it must be a funeral full of life!” Their collaboration premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival. Now, Galleria Continua presents JR’s photographic variations on the same theme: strange and gigantic burial scenes set in the countryside and shot from above. —E.C.
