Although he had never received formal training in art, the British artist John Nash (1893–1977) was commissioned as an Official War Artist. He covered both the First and Second World Wars. Indeed, his highly regarded painting of 1918, Over the Top, became emblematic of W.W. I. The younger brother of the artist Paul Nash, who sometimes overshadowed him, John was also a prolific illustrator and landscape painter, and an expert in horticulture. This retrospective is his first exhibition in 50 years. Works spanning Nash’s seven-decade career, plus photographs and diaries, shed light on his multifaceted art and life. —E.C.
