John Currin: My Life as a Man

Sept 15 – Dec 22, 2019
161 Glass St, Dallas, TX 75207, United States

American artist John Currin’s relationship with gender has always been complicated. “Yeah, I mean, I made misogynist paintings at a time when I was having misogynist feelings,” he said in a recent interview. Despite accusations of misogyny, those paintings now sell for millions of dollars. But could it be that today’s era of heightened sensitivity poses too much of a risk for Currin? This fall, “My Life as a Man” marks the first-ever exploration of Currin’s male iconography, complete with the Renaissance echoes and satirical tones he is known for, and avoiding female subjects entirely. —J.V.
