Joel Meyerowitz: Europe, 1966–1967

Joel Meyerowitz, Málaga, 1966.

Palacio de Buenavista, Calle San Agustín, 8, 29015 Málaga, Spain

In 1962, when most photographers were shooting almost exclusively in black and white, Joel Meyerowitz tried something new—he took photographs in color. He also quit his job at an advertising agency and roamed the streets of Manhattan, camera in hand, capturing images that defined that critical time in America. In 1966, Meyerowitz went on a year-long road trip across Europe, traveling 20,000 miles through 10 countries and settling in the Spanish coastal city of Málaga for six months. There he befriended a traditional Escalona family and fell in love with flamenco. Meyerowitz, now 87, is world renowned as a “color magician.” This exhibition chronicles his fruitful period in Europe. —Elena Clavarino
