At the Vienna State Ballet, artistic director Manuel Legris—once a divine danseur noble at the Paris Opera Ballet—finally completed the Medieval necklace known as George Balanchine’s Jewels. He had “Rubies” and “Diamonds,” the last two sections of the triptych, in his pocket. But he still needed “Emeralds,” the Melisande-ish doorway into Balanchine’s Symbolist world. Now, in Legris’s last months at the helm in Vienna, he—and we—can sigh over the completed Jewels, which had its Vienna debut on November 2 and comes back for four performances in December—2, 5, 7, and 9.
