“How do things get to where they are?” This question drives the German photographer Jessica Backhaus, who was born in 1970 into a family of artists in Cuxhaven, Germany. Backhaus photographs the mundane, looking for new meaning in easily missed moments—the distorted reflections of buildings in a puddle on the ground, for example, or clothes hangers casting shadows on blue bedsheets. In this show, three recent series are on view: “Far Away but Close,” “Confinement in Berlin,” and “Cut Outs.” In “Cut Outs,” Backhaus shoots flimsy transparent paper in eyepopping close-up. These images pivot away from figuration and embrace abstraction. —Elena Clavarino
