Jenny Holzer: Thing Indescribable

Mar 22 – Sept 9, 2019
Abandoibarra Etorb., 2, 48009 Bilbo, Bizkaia, Spain

“Raise your words, not your voice,” said the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi. “It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder.” Words have been the American artist Jenny Holzer’s medium for decades, starting with a 1970s series of posters that were placed around New York City. In the largest Holzer exhibition to date, works from her aphoristic Truisms and Inflammatory Essays series are displayed alongside site-responsive installations and more recent art: statements on U.S. politics from 9/11 up through, you guessed it, the written words in publicly released government documents. —J.V.
