Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley uses video games, performance, animation, and sound to interweave the unreal and the real. “A lot of trans people I know, especially, are drawn to a kind of spiritual way of seeing the world and talk about themselves as deities,” she has said, “[I envision] a lost god returning to earth to change the physics of how everything works by centering Black trans people.” Brathwaite-Shirley is only 29, but has completed a residency in South Cambridgeshire, and has shown her work at London’s Science Gallery and David Kordansky, in Los Angeles. She’s now living in Berlin, and her video work No Comment is coming to Barcelona. Which bodies do we claim justice for?, it asks. Which bodies are forgotten? —Elena Clavarino
