Jennifer Ling Datchuk: Don't Tell Me To Smile

Nov 6, 2019 – Jan 11, 2020
74 East 79th Street, 2D New York, NY 10075

“I always saw in my work how identity can be manufactured,” the artist Jennifer Ling Datchuk recently observed. For instance, she continues, “When I was in China, I met a hair dealer.” Hair is one of the materials that Datchuk, who is trained in craft arts, uses in her porcelain sculptures. Comprised of objects and tools that are typically associated with femininity, her work aims to rewrite disempowering narratives about womanhood. Two solo exhibitions—one in San Antonio, Datchuk’s home, the other in New York—highlight Datchuk’s ceramics, and her career-long rebellion against cultural instructions regarding women’s bodies, identities, and work. —C.J.F.
