Jeffrey Gibson was born in 1972 in Colorado. He is of Cherokee heritage and also a member of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw, both of which have informed his artistic practice. So has Gibson’s modernist eye. Organized by SITE Santa Fe, “The Body Electric” features Gibson’s recent paintings, sculpture, videos, installations, and a site-specific mural. Using animal hide, glass beads, fringe, and light, he pays homage to the natural world and humanity’s place in the cosmos. The title of this exhibition is a reference to one of Walt Whitman’s greatest poems, “I Sing the Body Electric,” a sermon of universal embrace and connection between all living things. —Clara Molot
