“I’m like a monk,”Jean-Andre Antoine told The New York Times in 2019. ” I just sit and listen to my music and wait.” Born in 1983 in Harlem, and raised there, Antoine uses a window ledge near the corner of Prince and Broadway as a shelf for his Crown Graphic press camera, circa 1947. He doesn’t chase after subjects; rather, he photographs passersby who approach him. Since beginning his practice on Prince Street, Antoine has also co-founded an independent zine called My Eye Got Lazy. More than 50 of his portraits are featured in this exhibition at Fotografiska New York. —Zack Hauptman
