In an effort to capture the flux of the natural world, the painter Janaina Tschäpe often layers her canvases with casein (an ancient milk-based paint), watercolors, colored pencil, and oil stick. In her latest body of work, Tschäpe pares back, using only oils. She says that this allows her to “dive further into the layers.” Evoking growth, transition, and metamorphosis, her newest works have a distinctive strata. —Clara Molot
