Jamian Juliano-Villani likes starting a painting, she told the fashion company Ssense, “with something relatively stupid, and then going back and forth until it cancels itself out with something actually meaningful.” Born in New Jersey, in 1987, Juliano-Villani wholeheartedly embraces today’s culture. Her colorful, hyperrealistic paintings often include images from memes, art history, and brands (think the Amazon logo, the Pillsbury Doughboy, and Uggs). Not afraid to use expletives and humor, Juliano-Villani is freely frank. In CULTURED, she recently listed three rules to live by: “Always spray tan two days before the event. Always buy cheap liquor—you’re just going to piss it out. Never be worried about looking like Christmas and Easter.” In her first solo show at Gagosian, in Chelsea, she presents 10 new paintings. —Jeanne Malle
