“I soon realized that I didn’t have a great passion for academia,” Jacob Hashimoto once said. “I would much prefer to be a carpenter.” And in a sense, he became one. Using traditional Japanese methods, Hashimoto creates large scale “tapestries” out of bamboo kites and crafted paper. The effect? Vibrantly colorful and knobby surfaces that may remind viewers of the intricate circuitry of a computer system. Hashimoto combines heritage methods with the excitement of abstraction. —E.C.
