Jac Leirner, known for contemporary found-object sculptures that nod to Duchamp, has been a pillar of the art world for over four decades. New York’s Swiss Institute has organized the first ever, and long overdue, major American survey of her work. The exhibition presents Leirner’s most recognized pieces, such as Blue Phase (1992) and the “Lung” series (1987), as well as new works commissioned by the Swiss Institute. Village Inside I and II (2023)—canvases covered in menus, napkins, matchboxes, and other treasures found throughout the East Village—are visual love letters to the neighborhood. Blurring the lines between trash and treasure, minimalism and materialism, this exhibition celebrates Leirner’s impact on contemporary sculpture. —Lucy Horowitz
