“The more you look, the more you see,” said Eleanore Mikus, referring to folded paper drawings she made in the 1960s. Mikus was one of six women artists—the others were Ruth Asawa, Gego, Louise Nevelson, Irene Siegel, and Hedda Sterne— who participated in a two-month program at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop. Lithography promotes an emphasis on materials, and exposes the laborious but often hidden process of creating a work. The medium allowed these artists, all of whom specialized in other mediums prior to their fellowships, to delve into realms of detail, texture, and contrast previously untapped. The Norton Simon Museum celebrates the lives and art of these six women. —Thalia Bonas
