The Danish art collective, Superflex, doesn’t use the word “art” to describe its work, it uses the word “tools.” These tools include the invention of a machine that turns bodily waste into cooking gas, and an urban park that was built from recycled materials. Less utilitarian projects—video footage of a McDonald’s flooding with water, for instance—are another kind of tool, one that disrupts mainstream ideas about the role of art (and the artist) in society. The solo exhibition of this socially-engaged collective includes sculpture and video. —C.J.F.
