Iké Udé: Select Portraits

Apr 4, 2021 – Jan 9, 2022
One East Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301, United States

The Nigerian-born, New York-based artist Iké Udé makes conceptual, color-saturated portraits. He has long questioned notions of identity and representation, and uses elements of classical painting as well as contemporary culture to ask such questions in his work. At the NSU Art Museum, Udé’s Nollywood portraits are on display. Though many of us are unaware of it, Nigeria’s film industry ranks second to Hollywood on the global stage. Udé captures Nollywood’s eccentric characters in photographs that highlight their creative agency. —E.C.
