“It is hard to avoid the aspect of time when producing what one sees as a photograph,” the artist Idris Khan once said. “My images are something that is not a frozen moment but an image made up of many moments and that is created over time rather than taken.” Recently, Khan has been scanning reproductions of historical artworks and processing them through a sound software application. This application distills the works according to their tone and color density, each hue paired with a specific musical notation. This means each work has its own score. The results are abstract and fascinating. In this exhibition, interpretations of such masterpieces as Leonardo’s Mona Lisa and Vermeer’s The Milkmaid and Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window are among the works on view. —Elena Clavarino
