Born and raised in Kharkiv, the second largest city in Ukraine, Boris Mikhailov trained as an engineer before giving in to his passion for photography in the 1960s. In the five-plus decades since then, he’s been one of the country’s eminent photographers, examining social and political conditions in the turbulent region. Marian Goodman Gallery presents photos and videos from several eras of Mikhailov’s career and Ukraine’s history. Three photo series from the 1980s and early 1990s capture, in real time, the social changes that accompanied the fall of the Soviet Union, what Mikhailov calls “life beyond the collapse.” Two video series, one from the 1960s and 70s and one from 2024, begin and end the show, tracking the hopes and tragedies that haunt Ukraine’s recent history. —Lucy Horowitz
