Ida Applebroog: Marginalias

June 2 – Sept 27, 2021
Calle de Santa Isabel, 52, 28012 Madrid, Spain

Ida Applebroog is a radical feminist and one of the world’s most provocative artists. She began developing her political and artistic identity at the Art Institute of Chicago, but it was a mental breakdown in early adulthood that set her path. While convalescing in San Diego’s Mercy Hospital she drew in pencil, ink, and watercolor, works that became the backbone of her practice. She brings the intricacies of violence, power, gender, and sexuality to light—sometimes in single panels, sometimes in multiple panels—often portraying piercingly vulnerable subjects. Her most comprehensive retrospective to date contains works from five decades. —E.C.
